Welcome. Andy head shot

Counsellor in Totnes and Newton Abbot

Welcome. If you are looking for counselling , I offer a warm, friendly, down to earth approach to counselling. I provide a non-judgemental, fully confidential and safe space. In which you can talk about and explore whatever you need to, at your own pace . A real response, deep listening, working forward together to help you find creative solutions to past and present issues. I am currently working as a therapist in Totnes and Newton Abbot, both of which are only 9 or 10 miles from Torquay area.

Life can be very stressful , sometimes we cope well, sometimes we don't . We can feel overwhelmed with all the stress and strain of modern day living. We live in a 'do it yourself' culture where a great emphasis is placed on being "self reliant", that we SHOULD be strong, and that we SHOULD be able to cope. We can compare ourselves to others who seem to not have any problems and be coping with life better than us. This can make seeking the help we need difficult, and can make us feel very isolated sometimes . We may have felt like we have had to 'sort it all out' on our own for a very long time, even as far back as early childhood.

Also the culture we live in tends to deny the reality of mental/emotional health issues, and one can be perceived as weak for expressing vulnerability. Working with a counsellor can help people to break free from the social taboos and stigma that our culture imposes on mental/emotional health issues, and help them to realise their shared humanity. As human beings, we are not just physical beings that get bad backs, knees and stomach aches! We have a mental/psychological life as well, an inner life that has its ups and downs. And that fluctuates in terms of wellness over the course of our lives.

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
― Brené Brown

We may be dealing with dificulties in our relationships, family ,work and /orsocial life. We might experience alot of anxiety and depression, and feelings of isolation and loneliness, and find that we are unable to tell anyone about how we really feel. Or we may just be experiencing confusion or doubt. It can seem like we have lost touch with ourselves or our loved ones. We can feel disatisfied, unfulfilled and empty in our lives. All of this can add up to feeling stress , and feeling like it is too much to deal with on our own.

So it takes great strength and courage to come to Counselling especially for the first time. The paradox of this is that people can find real strength in allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, and not having to pretend that they have 'got it all together'. This often comes as a great relief for people working with a therapist for the first time. Therapy can provide a gateway through which we can change our lives for the better.
“What happens when people open their hearts?"
"They get better.”
― Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood
